John began his painting career at 12 in 1976, working summers with a painter his mother knew from Utah State. His journey took him through various companies, where he honed his skills and adapted to industry changes, ultimately allowing him to be self employed and spend more time with family.

A noteworthy chapter in his story involved working with Craig Costello Painting, from which John was wrongly fired twice—once due to personal differences and again over a $200 cash discrepancy wrongly attributed to John. 18 years later, the man who fired John saw him on a job site as owner of Cartwright Paint and offered a heartfelt apology, admitting that he discovered that the money was stolen by another crew member behind on his bills.
